Ailing Cuban leader, Fidel Castro resigned today leaving his brother Raul in permanent power of Cuba. So what does this mean for the Cuban Economic Embargo of some 40 + years and for access by U.S. citizens to Cuban cigars?
Probably not much right now….in fact, John Negroponte, Deputy Secretary of State said: “I can’t imagine that happening anytime soon.” He declined to comment further.
Our take: President Bush will not have the time left in his tenure to do anything about this as he wants to make sure that some form of democratic measures are taking place in Cuba. So it may be up to the next President to address this. If some forms of democratic processes do appear….who knows, we may finally be able to legally buy Cuban cigars in our lifetime!
