Cold Weather Got Your Humidor Down?

Winter time is cold time. Cold time is tough time on cigar humidors!

During winter, cold air knocks down the internal humidity reading of cigar humidors. Some, glass tops come to mind, more than others. So what to do? You just need to work a little harder to maintain proper humidity levels inside your humidor.

If you have a humidor with a passive humidity device, usually the humidifiers that come standard with the humidors, you will have to refill those more often and you can help out the passive device with a couple of other products. One being the Boveda Humidity Packs, they come in various Relative Humidity (RH) settings and you just toss them into your humidor for a additional boost of humidity. Be sure to consult the chart to determine how many you will need for your size humidor. Another solution would be the Cigar Caddy Crystal Gels Just open the top and place in your humidor for a additional boost of humidity. When the gels shrink by half, add some distilled water to re-generate them and watch them grow! When the weather warms up and your humidity readings begin to normalize, you can take out these wintertime helpers.

If you have a electronic humidification device, such as the Hydra or Hydra Commercial Grade Humidification systems, you should be turning the setting up. You may need to increase the setting from the factory set 70RH to 75RH or so to get proper humidification levels. Play around with the settings until you get the internal readings you need for your cigars.

New Cigar Aficionado Lounge is Open!

The new Cigar Inn in Manhattan officially opened for business on December 2 as owners (and brothers) Billy, Gus and Bass Fakih cut the ribbon to the shop, welcoming in a crowd of about 50 patrons and friends. The upscale cigar store, located on Second Avenue between East 53rd and 54th streets, contains the world’s first Cigar Aficionado smoking lounge and Cigar Aficionado humidor.

The comfortable smoking lounge, outfitted with leather couches and chairs and a working gas fireplace, occupies nearly a third of the 3,000-square-foot shop. Eighty humidified lockers are available for rental at the back wall of the lounge.

The shop is meant as the complete man’s retreat. In addition to a walk-in humidor brimming with cigars from the top names in the business, the Cigar Inn sells a line of men’s haberdashery items, with an emphasis on fine ties. There is also a Brioni counter, accessories from Elie Bleu, Dupont, Davidoff, Dunhill and Xikar, a row of Manning humidors and many other items for sale.

The store boasts several flat-screen televisions and a sophisticated sound system; classical music is the preferred sound for Cigar Inn, but when the New York Giants areplaying, the game will be on in the lounge.

Two custom-made barber’s chairs, imported from Japan, are stationed before two gilded frame mirrors, and a barber will be available by appointment. An old-fashioned shoeshine stand, with two seats, is also part of the shop.

“You don’t see this layout in any tobacco shop,” said Gus Fakih. The store is three times the size of the original Cigar Inn, which is located on First Avenue between East 70st and 71st streets. That shop (which is one-third the size of the new one) will remain open.

The Cigar Inn on Second Avenue is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. On Sundays, the store closes at 9 p.m., unless special events are being televised. “If there is any game—any Super Bowl, any boxing event—we stay late,” says Billy Fakih.

The clientele is close. After the ribbon cutting, regulars from the original shop took seats in the spacious lounge, firing up cigars and chatting like old friends. Rabbi Jack Brach, a customer, brought a large spread of food to help welcome the guests to the shop. “It’s like family,” said longtime Cigar Inn customer Paul Chapman, the vice chairman and president of ABC Carpet & Home, which supplied the furniture for the store’s lounge. “It’s like sitting in your own living room.

Cigar Rights of America Freedom Tour on the Roll!

Los Angeles, August 20 – The Cigar Rights of America Freedom Tour has begun in a big way, with a heavily-attended opening at Hudson Terrace in New York City on Tuesday night.

The tour is designed to promote membership in CRA, designed as a grass-roots voice for cigar smokers to have impact as heavier taxes and smoking bans spread across the country.

The effort is drawing some notice, with articles appearing in Crain’s Chicago Business and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in advance of the stops there today and tomorrow. The remaining events in the five-city, four-day tour include:

Wednesday, August 20: Minneapolis, Minnesota

LOS ANGELES, July 30 – Formed to advance the interests of cigar enthusiasts across the nation, the Cigar Rights of America Freedom Tour 2008 will kick off the organization’s national membership drive with a five-state blitz beginning on August 19 in New York City.

Driven by increasing calls from cigar enthusiasts, CRA was formed in early 2008 by a consortium of cigar manufacturers and premium cigar retailers to give cigar enthusiasts a forum to collectively showcase their outrage at continuing legislative and regulatory attacks which deprive them of reasonable opportunities to enjoy premium, handmade cigars . . . even when all alone on a city street!

New Cigar Advocacy Group!

It appears that cigar smokers have a new advocacy group on the near horizon! Cigar Rights of America (CRA) posted, or we believe they posted a press release recently announcing their new formation and the objectives of the group.

Obviously this group’s aim will be to promote the rights of cigar smokers across this nation and to fight next years SCHIP battle when it is expected to resurface.

The groups website is not yet active, but according to the release it should be ready this week. The groups website is www.cigarrights.org

This should be welcome news to all cigar smokers as there will new and serious battles next year as Congress looks again to find ways to curtail our right to smoke cigars!
